Carpool to School Challenge at Strath Haven High
Carpool to School Challenge at Strath Haven High
During the month of October, Strath Haven High School seniors competed in the first-ever "Carpool to School Challenge." The contest was jointly sponsored by aFewSteps and Green Haven, the high school environmental club. The objective of the contest was to raise awareness about the benefits of carpooling. The top winner was Anthony Campanella of Swarthmore, who drove an average of 5.5 students to school each day in October. Ned Newton of Swarthmore and Samantha Powers of Wallingford won second and third place, driving an average of 4.1 and 3.9 students to school each day respectively.
"We estimate the three winners saved 1,854 miles from being driven," said Green Haven advisor and SHHS guidance counselor Jennifer Salvage in announcing the winners. "We will definitely plan to hold another Carpool Challenge in the spring," said Green Haven president Dylan Van Dyne.
Strath Haven High School principal MaryJo Yannacone was also enthusiastic about the competition. She awarded Anthony a prime parking spot for the month of October. "Parking at the high school is at a true premium. If more students would carpool to school, so many more students could obtain parking spots. The carpool challenge was a perfect incentive for a November spot!"
