Take the Green Power Challenge!

Swarthmore prides itself on its reputation of high sustainability. In 2013, Swarthmore ranked fifth in percentage of green power usage as part of total electricity usage in the US Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Challenge. In the competition with 48 other communities from around the nation, Swarthmore purchased 33.4% of its power from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

In 2009, both Nether Providence and Swarthmore were awarded demonstration-scale solar installations as part of a SmartPower promotion of wind power.  Nether Providence Township has been purchasing 100% renewable energy for all its facilities since 2011.

With the recent deregulation of utilities, it’s easier than ever to buy 100% green power.  PECO’s electricity rates change quarterly, but in most instances the green power options are fairly competitive with PECO’s rates.  aFewSteps.org would like to encourage residents in the area to take the Green Power Challenge by switching to one of these other renewable energy options .
