Waste
Locally most of our trash is sent to the Chester Resource Recovery Facility, a trash-to-power plant in Chester. Trash-to-power incinerators have historically been controversial because of the potential health risks to nearby communities from pollution In recent years, however, process improvements, including recycling of metals from the ash, and greater understanding of the pollution from alternatives to trash-to-power, such as air and water pollution from burning coal or green-house gas pollution from landfills, are raising the estimates of the benefits relative to costs of trash-to-power. Some of the ways that you can prevent food waste are also major ways of reducing solid waste as well: Composting food waste reduces the overall trash produced for collection.
