On March 11 and 12, Swarthmore College hosted a Sustainability Charrette which brought together community stakeholders – students, faculty, staff, and community neighbors – as well as some of the nation’s leading sustainability experts to discuss the College’s future development plans and its new Biology, Engineering and Psychology (BEPJ) building in particular.
Laura Cacho, Director of Sustainability, organized the charrette and said she was pleased with the variety of voices that were heard at the event. “Prior to the charrette, most of the sustainability events on campus I have organized or have been part of have had the same twenty or so familiar faces. The charrette was organized to allow voices that had yet to speak openly about their ideas to be heard and for disparate ideas to be shared for all to hear,” Cacho told the College’s Daily Gazette.
The charrette participants included speakers Hunter Lovins, David Orr, Nikki Silvestri, Hunter Lovins, Bill Browning, John Fullerton, Greg Kats, and Kevin Hydes, as well as Swarthmore College acting president Connie Hungerford and Board of Managers chairman Gil Kemp. According to Kemp, the board will discuss immediately the proposals that emerged during the charrette.
